Martensitic Stainless Steels

At Radiant Industries, we specialize in producing a wide range of stainless steel products across various grades, including the robust and versatile Martensitic Stainless Steel—a key member of the 400 series.

Martensitic stainless steels are primarily alloyed with chromium (10.5% to 18%) and contain a higher carbon content (0.15% to 1.2%) compared to ferritic grades. This elevated carbon level enables these steels to be hardened and strengthened through heat treatment, making them ideal for applications requiring high mechanical strength and wear resistance.

These steels belong to the “hard” ferromagnetic category and retain magnetic properties in both annealed and hardened conditions. Structurally, martensitic stainless steels adopt a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure in their hardened form.

Production Capabilities at Radiant Industries

We manufacture a variety of martensitic grades tailored to diverse industrial needs and applications. Our commonly produced grades include:

  • SS 410

  • SS 416

  • SS 420

  • SS 430F

  • SS 431

Each grade is designed to meet specific performance requirements across different sectors.

Key Properties

Corrosion Resistance
Martensitic stainless steels offer moderate corrosion resistance, slightly reduced due to their higher carbon content.

Weldability
These grades have limited weldability and typically require preheating and post-weld heat treatment to prevent cracking and ensure optimal performance.

Formability
Due to their hardness, cold forming is moderate. The carbon content greatly influences the steel’s strength and hardness, with higher carbon leading to increased strength and reduced ductility.

Applications of Martensitic Stainless Steel

Martensitic stainless steels from Radiant Industries are widely used in industries where a combination of corrosion resistance, strength, and wear resistance is critical. Typical applications include:

  • Tool steels

  • Cutlery and kitchenware

  • Fasteners and fittings

  • Dies and molds

  • Surgical and dental instruments

  • Gas and steam turbine blades (petrochemical industry)

With a strong balance of mechanical properties and moderate corrosion resistance, martensitic stainless steels are ideal for high-performance and precision-demanding applications.
